Creating Gentle Bedtime Rituals
Bedtime can be one of the most challenging parts of the day for both children and adults. After a full, busy day, it’s not always easy to slow down and shift into rest mode.
That’s where bedtime rituals come in. In this post, I’m sharing a few of the grounding rituals that work well in our home. These simple practices help my child fall asleep more peacefully (and they help me wind down, too).
What Is a Ritual?
In our home, we lean on rhythms, routines, and rituals as the foundation of our days. These gentle structures give our family a sense of safety, flow, and connection. Here’s how I think of each one:
Routine: A repeated task or activity (daily, weekly, seasonally, or annually).
Rhythm: The flow and pattern of time.
Ritual: A routine made meaningful. It’s something we do with intention and presence.
Rituals turn ordinary moments into something special. They help anchor us in the present, bringing warmth and magic to the everyday. Since adding more rituals to our lives, I find I’m more consistent with routines and I move through the day with more calm intention.
Why add rituals to your bedtime routine?
Rituals help smooth transitions, something especially helpful during that tricky shift from playtime to bedtime. They create a gentle signal: the day is ending, and it’s time to rest.
Our brains naturally link experiences over time. If you smell buttered popcorn, you might suddenly feel ready for a movie. In the same way, repeating certain sensory rituals at bedtime can help the brain associate those cues with sleepiness and calm.
When practiced consistently, sensory bedtime rituals (like scent, sound, and soft light) can support better sleep for children and adults alike.
Five Grounding Bedtime Rituals
Here are a few simple rituals we use in our home to create a soothing, sensory-rich bedtime rhythm:
1. Lavender Aromatherapy
Lavender has been widely studied for its calming and sleep-supportive properties. Whether it’s a few drops in a diffuser, a pillow mist, a lavender-scented lotion, or Epsom salts in the bath, this gentle scent helps cue our bodies for rest. Studies have shown that lavender aromatherapy relieves anxiety and stress (Donelli et al. 2019, Kang et al. 2019), improves sleep quality (Lillehei et al. 2015, Shen et al. 2025), and increases blood melatonin levels (Velasco-Rodriquez et al. 2019).
2. Play Soothing Music
We play the “nighttime radio” on our Yoto player every evening. The instrumental melodies are soft and comforting, and they help lull everyone, adults included, into a calmer state.
3. Read a Bedtime Verse
We recite a simple verse or rhyme to mark the end of the day. It’s a small, poetic way to shift out of play and into rest. We love Seven Times the Sun for its many gentle verses and seasonal songs (It’s sadly out of print, but worth tracking down secondhand).
4. Light a Candle
We light a small jar candle during our bedtime story. The warm glow adds a cozy, warm feeling to bedtime. If an open flame doesn’t feel safe, a battery-powered candle or soft night light can offer the same cozy mood.
5. Read a Bedtime Story
We usually read two or three books before bed. I lean toward gentler, slower-paced books in the evening if possible. Sometimes my daughter will choose a non-fiction or less calm story, and I find that keeping a slow, calm tone in my voice is what matters the most for a relaxing storytime more than the story content.
Adding even one or two simple rituals to your bedtime routine can transform the mood of your evenings. They help little ones feel safe and relaxed, and they offer us, as caregivers, a moment of pause and presence, too.
